Peter
Apostle mentioned in the mystical procession of Purgatorio XXIX, indicated as the guide of the celestial militia in Paradiso IX and remembered among the martyrs in Paradiso XVIII.
Profile
In Purgatorio XIII the faithful of the second cornice, during the hymn Miserere, name the apostle Peter by shouting his name, alongside Michael and All the Saints, as a sign of their supplication for salvation. In Paradiso IX his figure is recalled by Cacciaguida, who alludes to the militia that Peter followed, indicating the celestial host that has recognized in Christ the guide designated by God. In Paradiso XVIII Peter is remembered in a historico-theological recollection that associates him with Paul, both of whom died for the faith and are proposed as examples of missionary zeal and sacrifice. The three occurrences do not materially place Peter in a scene of the journey, but attest to his function as an apostolic model and to his liturgical memory in Purgatory.
