The Reliefs of the Proud and the Second Stairway
Guide to the canto
Dante has left the first terrace and still walks alongside a soul bent beneath the weight, until Virgil invites him to proceed on his own. The pavement of the new stretch is adorned with examples of punished pride: Lucifer, the Giants, Niobe, Saul, Troy, and others. It is the second message of Purgatory, and the angel closing the ledge announces a climb now free of effort.
Whom we meet
Virgil resumes his role as practical guide: he points out the figures to observe on the pavement, recognizes the angel returning from the day's service, and explains to Dante, with a smile, the mechanism of the P's. The angel, dressed in white, erases one letter from his forehead and invites the ascent with a gentle exhortation to those born to fly.
What to expect
After the removal of the second P, Dante feels a lighter body and asks Virgil what has changed. The master clarifies that each erased P corresponds to an expiated sin, and the journey will become desire, not toil. Virgil's smile opens a new question: how many letters remain and how much road is left.
