Sennacherib

Sennacherib, king of Assyria, waged war against Hezekiah, king of Judah, and, in his arrogance, mocked the trust Hezekiah had placed in the God of Israel. At night an angel annihilated the Assyrian army; Sennacherib, returned defeated to Nineveh, was killed by his sons while praying in the temple. In Purgatory his case is the tenth example of pride sculpted on the terrace, presented by the verse «sovra Sennacherìb dentro dal tempio», in which two successive acts are distinguished: the sons who throw themselves upon their father to assassinate him, and their flight after the parricide.
