Saint Peter questions Dante on faith
Guide to the canto
Dante is still in the eighth heaven, in the Primum Mobile. Beatrice has asked the blessed to pour their grace upon the pilgrim: the lights stop and arrange themselves in concentric circles, like luminous spheres on fixed poles. A flame breaks away from the dance and comes down near Beatrice; the object of the gaze shifts, but the place does not change.
Whom we meet
Saint Peter enters the scene, the flame that was guide of the primitive Church and bore the keys received from Christ. Beatrice calls upon him and entrusts him with the task of examining Dante. Saint Peter questions the pilgrim directly: the relationship becomes face to face, in a dialogue marked by close questions and answers.
What to expect
After the examination on faith, the celestial court intones a hymn of praise. In the following cantos other blessed souls will put new questions to Dante on hope and charity, to complete the profile of the believer. The pilgrim draws meanwhile near the highest point of Paradise, where the vision of God awaits him.
