In Purgatorio XX he is recalled as the one who was seized (catto) by his vicar; in Purgatorio XXI he appears to the two disciples on the road to Emmaus; in Purgatorio XXIII he is mentioned as joyful while saying 'Elì'.

In the verses of the Comedy Christ is evoked in multiple contexts: as a figure seized by the vicar (Purgatorio XX 87); having appeared to the two disciples on the road (Purgatorio XXI 8); joyful in pronouncing 'Elì' (Purgatorio XXIII 74); Roman insofar as linked to Rome (Purgatorio XXXII 102); flashing in the cross of Mars (Paradiso XIV 104 and 108); invoked by the many who cry out his name (Paradiso XIX 106); recalled in the first convent of his followers (Paradiso XXIX 109); and as the spouse of the Church in his own blood (Paradiso XXXI 3). The notes to canto VI of the Paradiso clarify that the birth of Christ is placed by Dante in the pax augusta, a providential event prepared by Roman history, and that the condemnation of Christ in Palestine and the destruction of Jerusalem under Titus are read as punishment for the sin and the crucifixion.
