Romagna

Description

In Purgatorio V, v. 69, Dante places Fano, the city of Iacopo del Cassero, 'between Romagna and the land of Charles,' indicating Romagna as a geographical reference to locate the Adriatic coast. The notes to Canto XIV provide a broader picture of Dante's Romagna through the lords and families who inhabited it: Guido del Duca, a Ghibelline from Ravenna related to the Traversari and the Mainardi; Fulcieri da Calboli, nephew of Rinieri, podestà and captain of the people in various communal cities; Lizio da Valbona, lord of a fief in the Tuscan-Romagnol Apennines; Pier Traversaro, lord of Ravenna; Guido di Carpigna, of the counts of Carpegna in the Montefeltro; Guido da Prata, between Faenza and Ravenna; Federigo Tignoso, from Rimini. The notes also specify that some of these characters, such as Ugolin d'Azzo, although of Tuscan origin, lived permanently in the castles of Romagna.
