Maremma
Region of central Italy cited in the Commedia: in Inferno XXIX as a land of diseases and in Purgatorio V as the place where Pia dei Tolomei, a Sienese woman, died.
Description
The name Maremma appears twice in the Commedia. In Inferno XXIX, v. 48, it is associated with a land of evils, grouped together with Sardinia in the reproach of master Adamo. In Purgatorio V, v. 134, Pia dei Tolomei, a soul in Ante-Purgatory, recalls her own life story with the celebrated couplet «Siena mi fé, disfecemi Maremma» («Siena made me, Maremma unmade me»), where Maremma is indicated as the place of her death. The authorized notes to Canto VI of the Inferno also place in the Maremma the castle of Radicofani, where the Sienese brigand Ghin di Tacco settled.
