River cited by Carlo Martello in the Heaven of the Fixed Stars as a geographical boundary: it rises into the sea together with the Tronto.

Description

In the verse of Paradiso VIII 63, the river Verde is recalled by Carlo Martello alongside the Tronto as a watercourse that descends to the sea: "da ove Tronto e Verde in mare sgorga" (where Tronto and Verde disgorge into the sea). The notes to Canto III of the Purgatorio further identify Verde with the ancient Liri, which marked the boundary between the Kingdom of Sicily and the Papal States, that is, the stretch beyond the Garigliano where the bones of Manfredi were transported by the papal legate, nearly along its course. Also in the notes to Canto III, it is specified that the episode of the translation of Manfredi's remains is attested in an uncertain manner by contemporary chronicles and that the words of the Malispini appear to be influenced by the Dantean text.
