Fiesole
Fiesole is recalled by Dante as the center from which the ancient founders of Florence descended, according to the legend of the city's Roman origins.
Description
Fiesole appears in Dante's verses as the place from which, in antiquity, those who would found Florence descended. In Canto XV of the Inferno, Brunetto Latini recalls the legends about the city's origin, told during evening gatherings and reaching back to Aeneas: the Romans destroyed Fiesole and from there descended to found Florence. In Canto XVI of the Paradiso, Cacciaguida likewise recalls his own descent from those who had come down from Fiesole. The ancient notes highlight how this legendary tradition was widely popular and was connected to the genealogy of the earliest Florentine citizens.
