The mystical procession in the Earthly Paradise
Guide to the canto
Dante and Matelda walk along the bank of the little stream, which bends eastward. After a few steps the woman turns and invites him to look and listen. A sudden light, more lasting than a lightning flash, fills the forest, accompanied by a melody. Beneath the green branches the brightness becomes like a fire, and the sound turns into a choral song, leaving Dante in suspense.
Whom we meet
Matelda is the only one to speak before the procession. The guide of reason observes the scene in silence, struck with wonder. Dante then sees seven golden candelabra, twenty-four elders crowned with fleur-de-lis, four winged creatures with six wings full of eyes, a triumphal chariot drawn by a griffin, three women on the right and four on the left, two old men, a group of humble figures, and a solitary old man who closes the cortège.
What to expect
The procession halts with a thunderclap when the chariot is facing Dante. The vision opens a decisive scenario for the end of the journey in Purgatory: the stopping of the cortège remains to be understood, along with what will happen when Beatrice truly enters the scene.
