Angelic order of the third celestial sphere, mentioned by Beatrice in the theological discourse of Paradiso I.
Profile
The Virtues constitute one of the angelic hierarchies that populate Dante's Paradiso. In the verse of Paradiso XXVIII they are placed in the celestial sequence after the Dominations, according to the order of the angelic hosts that Beatrice expounds to Dante. The note to Canto I of the Paradiso clarifies that Beatrice's discourse concerns the entire order of the universe and the meaning of the ascent of a man, in soul and body, through the heavens to God: in this theological cosmology the angelic hosts, including the Virtues, represent the degrees of being and of closeness to the Creator.
