Rabano Mauro

Benedictine monk and Archbishop of Mainz, author of theological and exegetical works cited by Dante in Paradise among the wise.

Profile

Rabano Mauro is mentioned by Dante in the heaven of the wise, where he indicates him with only the name «Rabano» in the verse that places him beside himself, closing the garland of the wise at the poet's side. The critical note to verse 139 identifies him as Rabano Mauro, Benedictine monk in the monastery of Fulda, Archbishop of Mainz, who died in 856, author of theological and exegetical works that nourished medieval encyclopedism. The place assigned to him by Dante, at his side, is the same privileged role that in the subsequent crown will belong to Siger beside Thomas. The textual form used by Dante is exclusively «Rabano».
