Puccio Sciancato

Puccio Sciancato is mentioned by name by Caccianimico in Canto XXV of the Inferno, within the list of the seven Florentines of his faction who struggle on all fours in the seventh bolgia, the ballast of the seventh circle. Verse 148 names him directly, following the references to Buoso Donati (v. 140), to the crawling posture (carpon, v. 141), to the seventh ballast (v. 142), and to the transformations described in verses 143-147. The authoritative note to verse 140 clarifies that regarding the Buoso mentioned here it has been debated whether he was of the Abati or the Donati, but it seems more probable that he was a Buoso Donati, of the same age as the other four, a signatory of the peace of Cardinal Latino in 1280, uncle of Corso, Piccarda, and Forese, and nephew of the Buoso Donati mentioned in Inferno XXX 40-5, "counterfeited" by Gianni Schicchi. This note circumscribes the familial identity of Buoso, but adds no direct elements regarding the person of Puccio Sciancato, whose only attestation in the text is the onomastic mention at verse 148.
