Families and factions

Mosca

Historical Florentine figure, belonging to the Lamberti, a Ghibelline. Remembered as the advisor of the killing of Buondelmonte dei Buondelmonti, he is punished among the sowers of discord.

Profile

Mosca dei Lamberti belonged to a powerful Ghibelline family of Florence and is remembered for having advised the killing of Buondelmonte dei Buondelmonti, an event considered the beginning of the divisions between Guelphs and Ghibellines in Florence. He is numbered among the sowers of discord and appears with his wrists cut, raising the stumps. His dramatic figure is marked by physical punishment and remorse for the disaster he brought upon his city and his lineage: the Lamberti, in fact, were banned and exiled forever from Florence. The phrase he uttered, «e morte di tua schiatta», thus ruined both the city and the family together. He finally moves away shaking his arms, as if out of his mind from pain, leaving the scene in a manner similar to other great damned souls.
