Moronto is mentioned as the brother of Cacciaguida in the brief recollection that the latter makes of his own family. Cacciaguida lists the name of his brother among his own blood relatives while tracing his lineage, following the chivalric custom of recalling brothers-in-arms and blood. The figure receives no further characterization in the Dantean text and is not otherwise described in the authorized notes, except for the family tie with Cacciaguida, Dante's great-great-grandfather, who here recounts his own birth and lineage. The only biographical data that can be drawn from the verses in question is therefore belonging to the same family unit as Cacciaguida, expressed through the formula «mio frate» ("my brother").
