Greci

People of antiquity recalled by Cacciaguida in the list of Florentine families in Paradiso XVI.

Profile

The name «Greci» is attested solely by Paradiso XVI, 89, where Cacciaguida, recalling the ancient houses of Florence, lists among others «Filippi, Greci, Ormanni e Alberichi». It is therefore a Florentine family, and not the ancient Greek people: the same form «li Greci» occurs elsewhere in the Commedia (for example in Inferno IX 39, where the commentary identifies in the term the Greeks of Troy with Ulysses and Achilles) but in that case the reference is mythological, whereas in Paradiso XVI the Florentine genealogical context is explicit. The authorized notes provide only the verse of Paradiso XVI 89 as attestation of the family surname, without further biographical details on the members of the house.
