Farinata degli Uberti, a Ghibelline leader of Florence, remembered by Dante among the great citizens of the past; in Canto X of the Inferno he is placed among the heretics in the burning tombs.

Farinata degli Uberti is presented as one of the Florentine citizens of the past generation whose eternal fate is asked about by Dante. He is mentioned in Canto VI of the Inferno, where he is recalled among the most worthy of the past alongside Tegghiaio. In Canto X he is the protagonist of the scene, shown as he rises in his tomb among the heretics, and during the encounter he utters the celebrated verse "my son, where is he?," by which he despairs over the fate of Guido, his son. His figure is closely tied to political and civic themes, as a leading Ghibelline, and is introduced as an emblem of the relationship between history and eternity in the Commedia.
