Clement IV

Pope Clement IV is mentioned in Purgatorio in relation to the excommunication of Manfred, who nevertheless obtained divine pardon for his final repentance.

Profile

In Purgatorio, Manfred recalls the circumstances of his own burial and remembers that, with the refusal of the bishop of Cosenza to absolve him, his salvation was nonetheless assured by his turning to God. The commentary notes how in a letter sent precisely to Pope Clement IV, Charles of Anjou reported that he had provided for the burial of Manfred's body, identified on the battlefield after several days, with a certain honor, though not ecclesiastical.
