Cirïatto

Profile

Cirïatto is one of the devils of the escort entrusted to Barbariccia in the fifth bolgia of the Inferno, where the Malebranche torment the barrators immersed in boiling pitch. His name appears in the roll call of the squad begun in Inferno XXI, where the series of fanciful names contributes to the overall effect of overbearing aggression and farcical menace. The only action that singularly characterizes him in the scene is reported by Ciampolo, who, pierced by the devils' hooks, recounts having been wounded precisely by Cirïatto, from whom the narrator specifies that the blow came out of his mouth. The mention, contained in a single verse, thus places him among the executioners of the bolgia and not in other circles or cantos.
