The figure is attested solely by the single verse of Canto XXVIII of the Inferno, where he is recalled in the act of weeping, presenting himself to the poet in chains, as can be gathered from the same scene of the damned. The authorized critical notes provided here chiefly concern Canto I and add no further data on the identity, origin, or history of Alì; therefore the entry limits itself to recording the Dantesque textual mention and the action attributed to him by the verse, without adding biographical elements not supported by the sources.
