In the Caina Dante cites Alberto, son of Alessandro degli Alberti, counts of Mangona, as the perpetrator of the killing of his cousin Orso, in turn son of Napoleone, who in the ice lies next to his brother Alessandro "because they were killed one by the other's hand." According to the notes, Alberto was then killed by his nephew Spinello: a chain of bloodshed that the authorized notes point to as an example of the hatreds and vendettas in the cities of the time. In Paradiso XIX, moreover, Alberto is mentioned by Cacciaguida in a list of figures, for whose "deeds" the Florentine people will be renewed in their customs. The notes specify that a further Alberto, killed in 1308, was recalled in Cacciaguida's prophecy (Par. VI) alongside his son Rodolfo, who died in 1307; but this Alberto does not coincide with the one in the Caina. For the entry, therefore, the Alberto of the Alberti family of Mangona is retained, attested by the verse of Inferno XXXII and by the notes relating to canto VI.
