Mount Uccellatoio near Florence, from which the city appears to those coming from Bologna, just as Montemalo shows Rome from the Via Cassia.
Description
The name Uccellatoio designates a mountain situated near Florence. According to the notes to the canto, arriving from Bologna the city could be seen from its summit, just as Montemalo – that is, Monte Mario – revealed Rome to those traveling the Via Cassia coming from Viterbo, the road most frequented at the time. The Dantean mention thus alludes to the appearance of Florence seen from above, to the splendor of its buildings, palaces, and towers. The pronoun "che" in the verse must be referred to Montemalo, which stands for the city in its grandiose aspect: just as Rome, symbolized by Montemalo, has been "surpassed" in ascent, that is, in architectural grandeur, so it will be overtaken in decline.
