Tronto
The Tronto is the river that, together with the Verde, marks the northern boundary of the mainland Kingdom of Sicily and flows into the Adriatic Sea.
Description
The Tronto is mentioned by Dante in Paradiso VIII, where Charles Martel indicates the three kingdoms that belonged to him: Provence, the kingdom of Naples, and that of Hungary. The river is paired with the Verde as the northern boundary of Puglia, that is, of the mainland portion of the Kingdom of Sicily, and marks the point where its waters, together with those of the Verde, pour into the sea. A note to canto XXVIII of the Inferno reaffirms this function as a boundary, since the name Puglia extended to the entire mainland portion of the Kingdom of Sicily, bounded to the north precisely by the Tronto and Verde rivers.
