Rhône
The Rhône is the French river recalled by Charles Martel in the Heaven of Venus as the boundary of Provence, the land of his future Angevin domain.
Description
In the Heaven of Venus Charles Martel points out to Dante the region that, on the left bank of the Rhône, receives the waters of the Sorgue: it is Provence, the first territory assigned to him as heir of the Angevin house, alongside the kingdom of Naples and that of Hungary. The same river is recalled in the Inferno, where the Malebranche recall their origins at Arli (Arles), situated on its delta and famous for Alyscamps, the ancient burial ground later transformed into a Christian cemetery. The Rhône thus marks, for Dante, both the natural boundary of Charles Martel's Provence and the mythical place of the burials of the Christian warriors who fell against the Saracens.
