Pachino
Pachino is a cape in Sicily cited by Dante in the Paradiso as the southernmost extremity of the island, opposite Peloro, on the gulf battered by the Scirocco.
Description
In Paradiso VIII, v. 68, Dante places Pachino as one of the two extreme promontories of Sicily, together with Peloro: the island stretches «tra Pachino e Peloro, sopra 'l golfo». The notes to the passage identify these two capes with the modern Capo Passero and Capo Faro, indicating in the gulf the stretch of sea that washes the Sicilian coast between the two points, subject to the violence of the Scirocco wind (Eurus). The Dantesque mention is part of the description of Trinacria, ancient Sicily, evoked with its classical names and surrounded by an almost fabulous aura before the bitter reference to the evil lordship of its governors.
