Normandy
Normandy is recalled by Dante in the Purgatorio (XX 66) as one of the English fiefs taken by force from the house of France under Philip IV.
Description
In Purgatorio XX, listing the acts of plunder carried out by the house of France against the fiefs of the king of England, Dante mentions Normandy alongside Ponthieu and Gascony. The notes specify that these were territories belonging to the king of England as vassal of the king of France, seized by force and deceit by Philip IV, and in part already taken earlier by Philip II. Normandy is then recalled, in the notes to canto XVIII and canto XXVIII, in relation to Richard, duke of Normandy and brother of Robert Guiscard.
