Description
The river Macra is mentioned in Paradiso IX at verse 89, where the periphrasis 'tra Ebro e Macra, che per cammin corto' indicates the western portion of the Mediterranean, the stretch of sea extending from the Strait of Cadiz eastward, from the Iberian coasts to the Italian ones. The reference is inserted in the speech of a blessed spirit in the Heaven of Venus, who describes the marine expanse as the greatest cavity of water between the emerged lands. The river thus marks, together with the Ebro, the boundary between the two opposite coastlines of the western basin of the sea.
