Lille
Lille is one of the four principal cities of Flanders mentioned by Dante, whose italianized name «Lilla» is attested in the series at Purgatorio XX 46 alongside Douai, Ghent, and Bruges.
Description
In the twentieth canto of the Purgatorio Dante places «Lilla» in a series modeled on the French, pairing it with Doagio (Douai), Guanto (Ghent), and Bruggia (Bruges) to indicate the entire region of Flanders. The traditional note to verse 46 specifies that these are the four principal Flemish cities, designated according to the italianized usage of the time. The passage is part of the prophetic pronouncement made by the ancient king, who calls for divine vengeance upon his own blood for the betrayal committed by Philip IV the Fair against the Count of Flanders during the second war between the French and the Flemish (1297-1299).
