Lerici
Lerici is recalled by Dante as the eastern extreme of the Ligurian coastal stretch between La Spezia and Nizza, contrasted with Turbia to measure the harshness of that cliff.
Description
Dante places Lerici in Purgatorio III, where the name appears in the form «Lerice» alongside Turbìa as a term of geographical comparison. According to the notes to the canto, the two places mark respectively the eastern and western boundary of the Ligurian coast, at that time quite rugged and traveled by merchants and travelers headed toward France. The mention serves to measure the «più diserta» and «più rotta ruina» of the mountain of Purgatory, establishing a comparison with a stretch of road well known to readers.
