Governolo
Governolo is the point where the Mincio river leaves Lake Garda and flows into the Po, as recalled in Inferno XX.
Description
In the twentieth canto of the Inferno Dante mentions Governolo to specify where the Mincio river leaves Lake Garda and joins the Po. The verse fixes the terminal stretch of the Mincio, which flows slowly forming marshes between Mantua and its outlet, recalling the celebrated comparison with the woman who falls and gives way in a pool of water or mud. The reference places the site within the Po Valley geographical framework evoked by the canto, marking the passage of the river from Garda to the Po.
