Description
Galicia is the region of Spain that houses the tomb of the apostle James, the principal destination of medieval pilgrimages after the Holy Land. In Paradiso XXV, when the soul of the apostle James appears to Dante, joining that of Peter, the poet recalls that Galicia is the place toward which pilgrims travel. The verb «vicita», an archaic form for «visits», refers specifically to the action of the pilgrims who reach that sanctuary, considered by contemporaries the quintessential stop of Christian pilgrimage. The city that guards the apostle's tomb is still today a destination for devotees from the entire Christian world.
