A fountain celebrated by Dante for the freshness of its waters, mentioned by Maestro Adamo (Inf. XXX 78), who prizes it even above his sight.
Description
Maestro Adamo, condemned among the falsifiers of coin in the tenth ditch of the eighth circle, points to the fountain as the reason for his punishment: the memory of the sweet, fresh water of the Casentino increases his thirst. For this reason, in a famous verse, he declares that he would not give up his sight to see it again, because the sight of its waters makes his throat burn more than the illness itself. Ancient interpretations identify the place with the celebrated Fonte Branda of Siena, known for the freshness and purity of its waters, while a minority hypothesis places it near Romena, in the Casentino itself.
