Greek island mentioned by Dante in Canto XIV of the Inferno, where the Greek poet indicates it as the land in which he lived and died.
Description
In Canto XIV of the Inferno, during the account of Ulysses and Diomedes in the seventh circle, the Greek poet names Crete as his own land of origin. The verse spoken in the eighth bolgia introduces the island as the place of birth and death of the character, linking his mythological identity to the geography of the ancient world. Dante thus places Crete in the memory of classical antiquity, presenting it as a point of reference for figures of Greek epic engaged in narrating their own stories among the damned.
