Description
Cervia is recalled by Guido da Montefeltro in Canto XXVII of the Inferno (v. 42), where the river Montone, having left its natural course, «covers» the city with its flood, as cranes seasonally do with their wings. The mention is part of the survey of the cities of Romagna and their lords that Guido unfolds in Inferno XXVII, presented by Dante through dense and concrete periphrases: Ravenna with the Da Polenta, followed by the other centers of the region. The verse thus establishes Cervia as a locality of Romagna, cited alongside Ravenna in the polemical context about the covert wars that do not cease in the region.
