Casale FBC
Casale is the hometown of Ubertino da Casale, a Franciscan leader of the Spirituals, cited by Dante in Paradiso XII in contrast to Matteo d'Acquasparta.
Description
In Paradiso XII, v. 124, Dante mentions Casale alongside Acquasparta to recall the origin of Ubertino da Casale, born in 1259 at Casale Monferrato, a Franciscan who had been a disciple of Pietro di Giovanni Olivi at Santa Croce in Florence between 1285 and 1289, where Dante could have met him. Ubertino later became the combative leader of the Spirituals in their most extremist positions and composed in 1305 the Arbor vitae crucifixae. The note on the verse places the toponym as a reference to the friar's hometown, contrasted with Acquasparta, the seat of Matteo d'Acquasparta, representative of the 'relaxed' Franciscans.
