Carentana
Carentana is the vernacular form Dante uses to indicate Carinthia, an Alpine duchy that extended to include the Val Sugana, where the Brenta rises.
Description
In Canto XV of the Inferno Dante mentions Carentana as a geographical term to measure the time that elapses before the thaw. The critical note specifies that Carentana is the vernacular form (and in Latin writers Clarentana) used to indicate Carinthia. The Duchy of Carinthia comprised to the south part of the Bolzano and Trentino areas; Dante intends it here in a broad sense, as the Alpine zone in which the Val Sugana is also found, where the Brenta originates. The verse serves as a temporal measure: it indicates the moment that precedes the first wave of warmth and therefore the thaw that swells the rivers.
