Campaldino
Plain in the upper Valdarno where, on 11 June 1289, the famous battle between Florentine Guelphs and Aretine Ghibellines took place; in the Purgatorio it is remembered as the place of death of Buonconte da Montefeltro.
Description
The plain of Campaldino, in the upper Valdarno between Florence and Arezzo, is the setting for the battle of the same name fought on 11 June 1289 between the Guelph forces gathered around Florence and the Ghibelline forces led by Arezzo. The expression "sì fuor di Campaldino" indicates the point where Buonconte da Montefeltro, a Ghibelline captain wounded during the clash, fell dying as he fled toward the Casentino. According to Dante's account, his body was never found because a sudden storm, unleashed by the devil, supposedly swelled the river Archiano and carried away the corpse. The distance between the plain of Campaldino and the mouth of the Archiano exceeds five kilometers, a measure that Dante himself emphasizes with the specification "sì fuor di Campaldino".
