Description
Manfred indicates Benevento as the place near which is the bridge (Purg. III, 128) where his bones would still be buried under a heavy heap of stones, caused to be placed there by Charles of Anjou. According to the chroniclers, a great heap of stones was thrown upon him, perhaps one by every soldier, according to an ancient military custom. The bridge is identified in the notes as that of San Germano on the Calore river. Benevento is also the place where Manfred was defeated and killed in 1266 by Charles I of Anjou, son of Louis VIII and brother of Louis IX, summoned to Italy by Pope Clement IV to reconquer the kingdom for the Church.
