Acquasparta
Acquasparta is the place of origin of the Franciscan friar Matteo d'Acquasparta, mentioned alongside Ubertino da Casale as a representative of the extremism opposite to that of the Spirituals.
Description
In Canto XII of Paradiso, Bonaventure mentions, alongside Ubertino da Casale, the opposing current of the 'relaxed' Franciscans in monastic life, explicitly citing the friar from Acquasparta. The exegetical note specifies that this is the Franciscan Matteo d'Acquasparta, who, after serving as Minister General of the Friars Minor, received the cardinal's hat from Boniface VIII (1287) and became his most trusted legate, ultimately assuming the most intransigent defense of the Roman Curia. In the tercet where Dante pairs Casale and Acquasparta, the first name indicates the extremist position of the Spirituals, and the second the opposite position of those who defended the Curia against any radical reform.
