The Ughi family is recalled by Cacciaguida in Paradiso XVI, within the reflection on the changing fortunes of Florence and the decline of its ancient families. The verse 'Io vidi li Ughi e vidi i Catellini' (Par. XVI, 88) places it among the Florentine houses that, after a period of glory, are now deprived of their former fame. The notes to the canto explain that the poet himself recalls having seen these families when they still enjoyed renown, whereas now their name has faded with the passing of the years. The mention is part of Cacciaguida's broader reasoning on Fortune, which, like the moon upon the tides, ceaselessly covers and uncovers human things, producing alternating fluxes of power and abasement.
