The Thrones constitute the third order of the first and highest angelic hierarchy, alongside the Seraphim and Cherubim, and are presented by Dante as the channels through which God exercises justice: divine judgments are in fact reflected by the Thrones toward the lower heavens, and the blessed spirits read them in them as in a mirror. This identification is explicitly formulated by Cunizza in the heaven of Venus, who points to them as the foundation of the certainty with which her words appear «good», that is, in accordance with justice. The same order is recalled in the description of the Primum Mobile as «Thrones of the divine aspect», within the angelic host that eternally flourishes and sings the Hosanna, arranged in three orders. The textual presence of the denomination is therefore limited to the two paradisiacal passages, while any further doctrinal specification (citation of Gregory the Great, distinction among the three hierarchies, relationship with divine contemplation) is drawn from the authorized critical apparatus.
