Tobias

Father of the young man whom the archangel Raphael accompanied on the journey narrated in the Book of Tobit, recalled in Paradise as an example of the work of the archangel who healed him.

Profile

Tobias is mentioned by Dante in Paradiso IV, at verse 48, where the archangel Raphael, who accompanied him and restored sight to his blind father, is recalled as 'the other who made Tobias whole again.' According to the note to the canto, the episode is drawn from the Book of Tobit (3:25; 5-12), in which the young son of Tobias is assisted on his journey by Raphael, here identified as the third of the archangels mentioned in the verse alongside Gabriel and Michael. The note adds no further details on the figure of Tobias, limiting itself to indicating the father's role in the biblical account.
