Pagani
The Pagani, lords of Faenza, remembered in Purgatorio (XIV 118) as a lineage that will benefit from the heirless death of their leader Maghinardo, here called a demon.
Profile
In canto XIV of the Purgatorio, in a passage devoted to the corruption of the Romagnol houses, Dante pronounces the name of the Pagani, a family that ruled over Faenza (cf. note to verse 118). The head of the house was Maghinardo di Susinana, elsewhere branded in the Inferno (XXVII 50-1) and here called a demon, whose death, which occurred in 1302, marked the extinction of the family, as he had no male heirs (cf. note to vv. 119-20). The authorized note explains that the expression "Ben faranno i Pagan" is to be understood as "they intend, by not begetting again," in conceptual continuity with the following tercet (cf. note to v. 118). It is therefore a genealogical and political mention, lacking any personal presence on the scene of the journey.
