Lano

In Canto XIII of the Inferno, a soul cries out the name of Lano as it flees naked and scratched among the thorns of the wood of the suicides, chased by a pack of black dogs. The historical identification of the figure is provided solely by the exegetical note to verse 118, which recognizes in this character Lano (Arcolano) di Ricolfo Maconi, a very wealthy young Sienese who belonged to the so-called «brigata spendereccia» (spendthrift brigade). The note also records that he squandered all his possessions. Authoritative sources add no further biographical details, nor do they specify further the circumstances of his death or of his sin, limiting themselves to identifying him through scholarly means and to recalling the reference to Inf. XXIX 130.
