Guittone

Poet cited by Bonagiunta in Purgatorio as one of the masters of vernacular lyric poetry prior to the Stil Novo.

Profile

Guittone is mentioned in Purgatorio by Bonagiunta, who recalls him together with the Notaro and himself as one of the poets who preceded the Stil Novo. The exegetical note identifies him as Guittone d'Arezzo, the leader in Tuscany of the lyric tradition that tied back to the Provençal tradition, and a point of reference for a large part of the lyric production of the Duecento up to Guinizelli. His style is recalled as opposed to the sweet and graceful style of the new poetry. The internal criticism within the note to Canto XXVI traces precisely to Guittone the comparison with the «più persone» who would have preferred the simpler Giraut de Bornelh.
