Guido di Carpigna
Guelph lord of the counts of Carpegna in the Montefeltro, recalled by Dante in the Purgatorio among the liberal and courteous lords of the good old days, whose memory is today linked almost exclusively to these verses.
Profile
The name of Guido di Carpigna appears in Purgatorio XIV, v. 98, in the series of names that Guido del Duca utters with regret for the liberal lords of the past. The critical notes to the same canto identify him as a member of the counts of Carpegna in the Montefeltro, of the Guelph faction, podestà of Ravenna in 1251 and dead around 1289. The same notes also recall that he spent much of his time in Bertinoro and that he was celebrated for his generosity. The notes to canto XIV 98-99 explain that this enumeration has a nostalgic value: names today unknown, except for the Dantean verses that saved them from oblivion, still resound as almost proverbial examples of an irretrievably lost courtesy.
