Guido da Prata

A contemporary and fellow citizen of other illustrious men from Romagna recalled by Guido Guinizelli in the Purgatorio; the name is linked to the locality of Prata or Prada between Faenza and Ravenna, attested in documents of 1184 and 1228.

Profile

Guido da Prata is recalled by Guido Guinizelli in the Purgatorio (XIV, 104) as one of the illustrious men of his land, together with Ugolino degli Ubaldini, Federigo Tignoso, and others, of whom the mold has now been lost. The surname refers to the locality of Prata or Prada, situated in the plain between Faenza and Ravenna, mentioned in documents of 1184 and 1228. According to the Ottimo, Guido attained great repute for the way he lived together with Ugolino, born of lowly origin, and, having abandoned his native locality, he consorted continually with the nobles of the area. His mention is placed within the circle of the proud in the Purgatorio, where Guinizelli, in his purgation, evokes with nostalgia these figures who were close to him and his contemporaries.
