Profile

The name Gualterotti appears in the sixteenth canto of the Paradiso, when Cacciaguida, in the Heaven of Mars, recalls the ancient Florentine families. The verse mentions them together with the Importuni, immediately after the reference to the beautiful device, that is, the coat of arms of Marquis Hugh of Tuscany. The authorized notes to the canto clarify that Dante is listing the houses that retained in their coat of arms a part, or a quartering, of the Marquis's device: the Giandonati, the Pulci, the della Bella, the Nerli, the Giangalandi, and the Alepri. The Gualterotti are counted in this list for the sole fact of still bearing a fragment of that knightly arm. No other biographical details are provided by the sources, nor are any moral judgments or further historical information attributed to the members of the house.
