Galli

The Galli are named by Cacciaguida in the Heaven of Mars, among the Florentine families that were already great in his time: «e Galli e quei ch'arrossan per lo staio» (Paradiso XVI, 105). The notes to the passage indicate that the Galli were one of the households recalled by Villani and that they resided in the quarter of porta Santa Maria, next to the Fifanti in the same sestiere, while in that of porta San Piero were the Giuochi and in that of the Duomo the Barucci. The mention is part of the Caccianidian survey of the families of ancient Florence, called upon to illustrate the city's growth and change before the division into factions. In the verse the Galli are placed alongside the Chiaramontesi, «quei ch'arrossan per lo staio», distinguished from them but set on the same line in the list of Florentine lineages.
