Federigo Novello

Profile

Federigo Novello is mentioned by Dante in Purgatorio, where his name is pronounced in a list of spirits. According to the critical note on the verse, he was the son of Guido Novello of the Guidi counts of Casentino. He was killed in 1289 or in 1291 near Bibbiena by one of the Bostoli of Arezzo, while he had gone to the aid of the Tarlati of Pietramala, the same family to which Guccio dei Tarlati belonged, mentioned shortly before in the same list. The episode of his death, connected to the clash with the Bostoli, is illustrated in the note on the verse, which explicitly refers to the note on the preceding verse for the context of the feud between Aretine Guelphs and Ghibellines.
